City & State Burn Laws
South Carolina state law requires that you notify the South Carolina Forestry Commission prior to burning outdoors. In most cases, the law applies to burning leaves, limbs and branches that you clean up from your yard. The notification law does not apply within the city limits of Seneca as it is illegal.
If you live in the unincorporated areas of Oconee County you may call 1-800-705-8618. This toll-free number allows you a quick, easy way to make your yard debris burning notification. Just dial, listen to the message, and leave your name, address and phone number.
The law requires that you clear a firebreak around the burning site and have the right and proper equipment available to keep the fire under control. You must also stay with the fire until it is completely safe. It is unlawful to burn anything that is not natural such as the items listed. If your fire progresses beyond your control, do not wait to call 911. Remember, if the fire burns onto someone else's property, it is a violation of state law and a fine can be imposed by the State Forestry Commission.
For the residents that live inside the City of Seneca. It is unlawful to conduct outdoor burning. Over the years, complaints from nearby neighbors have prompted the Mayor and Council to pass city ordinance 2006-19 prohibiting outdoor burning. If you have any debris you would like removed from your property, contact City of Seneca Street and Sanitation at 864-885-2750. All curb side debris removal is a service provided by the city.
For all other questions regarding outdoor burning visit the South Carolina Forestry Commission's Website or call 803-896-8800.
